Police are appealing for witnesses after four people were killed in separate road crashes on both sides of the border over the weekend.

A man walking on the N2 between Ashbourne and Slane at Tuiterath, Balrath, Co Meath, died after being struck by a car at around 1.30am today.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been removed to Navan Mortuary for a post mortem examination.

In Co Tyrone, a man in his 40s died following a crash involving a lorry and a van. The incident happened on the Melmount Road, Victoria Bridge, outside Strabane, at around 10pm last night.

Also yesterday, a man in his 30s died after the car he was driving careered into a fence on the N5 at Knockanour, Castlebar, Co Mayo. He was the sole occupant of the car.

Separately, police have named a woman who died after being struck by a vehicle on the Gortagammon Road, Tullyhogue, outside Cookstown, Co Tyrone, just before 1am yesterday, as Jayne Burnside (23), who was from the town.

They have also appealed for witnesses.
