Gardai appeal after man (22) stabbed fighting off raiders

A young man was taken to hospital with serious stab wounds after attempting to fight off a number of raiders who broke into his home.

The aggravated burglary took place in an apartment complex in Co Carlow.

It is believed that up to three men were involved but no arrests have yet been made.

The victim (22) suffered stab wounds to his body and was last night due to be transferred to Waterford University Hospital to undergo surgery.

At 2.45pm on Thursday, gardai received reports of a burglary taking place at the Riverdale complex, Haymarket, Carlow. Officers rushed to the scene where they discovered a young man being treated by paramedics.

They dealt with his injuries before he was taken to St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny.

His injuries have been described as "serious but non-life threatening".

A forensic examination has been carried out and investigations are ongoing.

A senior source last night told the Herald that gardai were attempting to establish the number of people involved in the burglary and serious assault of the man.

"There were up to three people involved in what was a very serious assault on this young man," the source said. "Gardai are making progress."

Supt Gerry Redmond, of Carlow Garda Station, asked anyone who may have seen the incident, or who may have information, to come forward as soon as possible.

"I am appealing for information from anyone who may have heard or seen anything in the vicinity of Riverdale Apartments in Carlow, between the hours of 1pm and 3pm on Thursday," he said.Anyone with information is asked to contact Carlow Garda Station on 059- 9136620 or 1800 666 111.
