Garda tells of tasering naked man in the groin
In what is believed to be the first case of its kind in Ireland, a naked 22-year-old man was tasered in his private parts during the course of an arrest when violence broke out at a house party.
Details of the incident were outlined at a sitting of Gorey District Court in Co Wexford in which the two Dublin men were charged with public order offences arising from events in a house in Riverchapel, Co Wexford, on February 19 last year.
Before the court were Craig Corcoran (22), whose addresses were given as Hermitage Road, Lucan, and Clonattin, Gorey; and Dara Hart (21), of Cardy Rock Avenue, Balbriggan.
The court heard local gardai contacted the armed regional support unit after they gave evidence they were attacked in the house in the An Ban estate in Riverchapel after they went to investigate suspicious activity at the house party.
Among numerous people to give evidence at the six- hour hearing before Judge John Linday was Gda Thomas Gahan of the force's regional sup- port unit based in Waterford.
He told the court he was told that baseball bats and bottles had been seen in the house, and when he got to the scene after midnight his unit used an implement called an enforcer to open the front door.
In an upstairs bedroom they found two males and two females in a bed.
The females were cooperative, but Dara Hart had to be pepper sprayed, said Gda Gahan, before explaining that he deployed his taser at a naked Craig Corcoran.
One of the barbs of the taser attached itself to what Gda Gahan described as the defendant's groin area.
He then agreed that Mr Corcoran had in fact been hit on the tip of his manhood, and explained that he pulled out the barb which caused blood loss from what he described as a vascular organ.
The case was adjourned to June 29 to allow preparation of probation reports after the judge preferred garda evidence to that of the defendants.
