Garda station closed by flood

GALWAY'S main garda station was forced to close yesterday as a result of flooding.

Mill Street Garda Station was evacuated yesterday afternoon for safety reasons. The flooding occured during works being carried out at the building. The incident also led to all phone lines in the station being out of action. Members of the public were asked to contact either Salthill or Ennis garda stations for all policing matters.

Bid to rescue trapped miners

Rescue workers have been pumping water out of a coal mine in southern Turkey as relatives wait anxiously nearby after surging waters trapped 18 miners deep underground.

About 20 miners did escape the water yesterday, but officials said the remaining workers' chances of survival are slim unless they managed to reach a safety gallery. A broken pipe caused the flooding in the mine in the town of Ermenek.

30 shot dead in town centre

Islamic State group militants lined up 30 Sunni men in a town west of Baghdad and shot them dead, an Iraqi official and residents said.

The slayings took place on a main street in al-Bakir district in the town of Hit. Anbar provincial council chairman, Sabah Karhout, said the Sunnis killed were tribal fighters allied with the government and members of the security forces captured when the Islamic State group overran the town, located about 140km west of the Iraqi capital. Residents said the 30 men were paraded through the city by the militants before being gunned down.

Ant and Dec back for Brits

TV presenters Ant and Dec are to be the new hosts of the Brit Awards - 14 years after they last fronted the show.

The duo succeed James Corden who stepped down after hosting the event for four years running, including the famous moment in 2012 when he interrupted Adele during her winner's speech. The show could do with some of their ratings magic after the audience collapsed last year with the lowest figures since 2006, with just 4.6 million watching on ITV.
