A GARDA was sent a pig's head in the post to his home in a chilling threat by Limerick gangsters.

The garda -- who is based in Clare -- received the severed animal's head in recent days, and colleagues and friends of the officer are said to be outraged that he was singled out.

He is said to be highly regarded by his colleagues and those in the community where he works.

Gardai are now attempting to establish who sent the package to their colleague, what the motivation was, where was it sent from and on what date.

"It was a very personal attack. To have something like this sent to a person's home address is a despicable act. It is very sinister," the source said.
