A MAN who headbutted a garda while resisting arrest has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison.

David Murphy (25), of Wheatfield Avenue, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assaulting Gda Dara Kelly in Rathfarnham on March 1 last year.

Murphy has four previous convictions for violent behaviour. Judge Martin Nolan sentenced him to two-and-a-half years but suspended the final 18 months.

Sgt Brian Flynn said gardai were called to a GAA club in Templeogue after a fight.

Gardai later stopped Murphy and another man coming out of a garden and Murphy became aggressive.

Later in the patrol car, Murphy lunged at Gda Kelly, forcing him to stop. While Gda Kelly tried to restrain both men, his colleague was kicked in the face.

At one stage Murphy head-butted the officer after numerous attempts. Sgt Flynn said Murphy was eventually restrained after another officer struck him with a baton.
