Dublin 8's space age growdome has been awarded a significant prize fund and founders say they will now be able to complete the prototype.

The growdome, located at Flanagan's Fields in Dublin 8, is a model that can intensively produce food all year long.

This summer the project scooped up a regional award in the KBC Bright Ideas fund to comlete the prototype.

The dome received €4,000 in funds.

Founder Niall O'Brien told the Herald that the money will allow them to finish off the grow-beds so that the group can get "stuck in" to producing food.

"We are also using the dome to record unplugged acoustic sets as a kind of MTV unplugged in the dome," he said.

The group are also working on a smart phone app that will allow them to monitor the dome remotely.

"The idea is that when we have 40 domes across the country we can keep an eye on all of them," Mr O'Brien said.

The growdome will be part of DCC's upcoming culture night on September 18.
