Fresh hopes for new garda station west of the M50

A MEETING between top-ranking gardai and Independent TD Shane Ross has sparked hopes of a new garda station being opened in south county Dublin to serve areas like Stepaside, Sandyford and Kilternan.

Burglaries to businesses and homes have become a very common occurrence in Stepaside since the garda station closed there in 2013, and locals and politicians have been lobbying for it to be reopened.

Two weeks ago, Assistant Garda Commissioner John Twomey had a meeting with Deputy Ross and Independent councillor Kevin Daly on the matter.

"They agreed that they would look at any case we could make for putting a garda station in the area on the basis of the high population and we intend to make a submission in the coming months," Deputy Ross said.

For this submission, Mr Daly and Mr Ross will look at the towns and villages in south county Dublin that are west of the M50, like Kilternan, Stepaside, Sandyford village and Carrickmines.
