Aisling Brady McCarthy is “enjoying her freedom” in Ireland, and spending time with her husband and family after a murder charge against her in the US was dropped.

The Cavan native (37) spent almost two-and-a-half years in prison awaiting trial for the murder of one-year-old Rehma Sabir in Boston in January 2013.

The Irish woman – who had been living illegally in the States working as a nanny – returned to Ireland last week and is spending time with her Irish husband, Don.

Grehan, who accompanied her on the flight to Shannon last week, said Aisling is “doing amazingly well”, despite the fact that she has “been through hell”.

“It should never have happened. But, she’s enjoying her freedom, enjoying her time with her husband and family and just relaxing, taking it all in.

“She needs her space, but she is doing well. She’s a strong girl,” she said on RTE’s Prime Time last night.

Ms Grehan, who has since returned to the US, said her sister received a lot of letters from Ireland while she was in jail and that their brother Raymond and Aisling’s husband Don also visited regularly.

“It was tremendously difficult. We had wonderful people help out with the visits. Going into that prison and seeing your sister in there was just terrible.

“The fact that you had to leave her there after a visit, knowing that she did nothing wrong.

“It’s heartbreaking to think she had to stay in there a day, let alone two-and-a-half years.”

She described the support the family received as “tremendous” but added, “there are a lot of facts that haven’t been reported on and the evidence here today is the same evidence that was there from day one”.

Shortly after her acquittal, Ms Brady McCarthy said her prosecutors in the US should be ashamed of how she was treated.

She said parents of other children that she cared for in Boston regularly visited her in prison, describing them as a “huge source of comfort”.
