Footballer faces trial for assault

Glasgow Celtic and Irish international footballer Anthony Stokes will face trial next year in relation to an alleged assault at a Dublin nightclub.

Stokes (26), of Claremont Terrace, Glasgow, was sent forward to Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on District Court charges of assaulting causing harm to Anthony Bradley (42) at Buck Whaleys on Leeson St in June 8, 2013.

Lorcan Staines BL, defending, indicated to Judge Martin Nolan that his client was seeking a trial date.

Judge Nolan remanded Mr Stokes on continuing bail to the trial date which is set for May 11, 2015.

Beer fest serves up 13m pints

Sixteen days of beer-soaked revelry have come to a close with the traditional gun salute that heralds the end of Munich's annual Oktoberfest.

Authorities say some 6.3m visitors came to this year's event which ended Sunday, and 6.5m two-pint mugs of beer were drunk.

Police recorded a drop in crime this year to 1,290 offences, down from 1,525 in 2013. Incidents included at least one attempted heist of a trolley full of beer mugs and the destruction of a "monster" in a fairground ghost train.

Gunmen kill Swiss tourists

Two Swiss men were gunned down at a beach resort in the southern Philippines, police have said, adding that the attack did not appear to be a robbery or act of terrorism.

Police Senior Inspector Alwin Baclao said Robert Erich Lober (67) and Balthasar Johann Erni (78) were walking out of a beach resort with their Filipino girlfriends in Opol town in Misamis Oriental province when two men approached and shot them in the head and body.

London is the most desirable city in which to work in the world, according to a new study.

A survey of 200,00 adults from 189 countries named the UK capital ahead of New York and Paris.

The research, by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and totaljobs.com, also found that the UK was the second most appealing country for jobseekers after the United States.
