Five men charged after four gardai hospitalised in pair of Easter attacks
Four gardai were hospitalised with injuries sustained in two separate incidents across the country over the Easter weekend. A female garda suffered a fractured wrist and a male garda sergeant a suspected fractured jaw during an assault in Dublin in the early hours of Monday morning.
The incident happened when the two gardai approached a group of men in Finglas in north Dublin shortly before 2am.
One of the men in the group assaulted both gardai during the incident at Aylward Green.
"They called for back-up and a number of garda units went to the scene to assist them," said a garda spokesman.
Two men in their 20s were arrested in connection with the incident. Lee Maguire (28) and Thomas Donoghue (25), both from Finglas, appeared before Dublin District Court charged with public order offences. A file will also be prepared for the DPP in relation to the alleged assault of the gardai.
The two injured officers were taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown.
The female garda received treatment for a fractured wrist and was later discharged. The garda sergeant continued to receive treatment at the hospital for a suspected fractured jaw, said the garda spokesman.
Lord Mayor Brendan Carr appealed for anyone with information in relation to the incident to contact gardai, while wishing the two injured members a speedy recovery.
"I strongly condemn the attack on two members of An Garda Siochana, which occurred in the Finglas area last night," he said.
"I would like to pass on best wishes on behalf of the people of Dublin to the two gardai and wish them a full and speedy recovery."
"While I accept that the public may have concerns in relation to some ongoing issues within the gardai, the ordinary men and women who are working on the streets to protect us all are doing a great job in some very difficult circumstances.
"They fully deserve our respect and appreciation and I would urge the public to show their support for them by providing any information in relation to last night's attack."
Separately, three Lithuanian nationals have been charged in relation to another assault, which resulted in two gardai being hospitalised.
The assault on the male garda, who was accompanied by a female officer, occurred at Station Road, Claremorris, Co Mayo, in the early hours of Easter Sunday.
They were treated at Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar, and were later discharged.
The three young men arrested following the incident appeared before Judge Mary Devins at a special court sitting in Ballina yesterday morning charged with assault causing harm.
They are Krits Kiepis (18), of Grattan Close, Claremorris; Karolis Astruskzs (21), of Chapel Court, Claremorris; and Elvis Vitolins (22), of Chapel Court, Claremorris.
All three were remanded in custody.
