Fireman John's on song with musical proposal
A teacher who got engaged in the middle of a performance of the school musical Hairspray said she was "overwhelmed" by the shock proposal.
Having been best friends since childhood, Dearbhail Downey (27), originally from Walkinstown, agreed to marry Kildare fireman John Edmonds (29) when he walked on stage and popped the question.
The couple met when they both moved into a new estate in Naas 15 years ago, but the romance didn't blossom until eight years later.
"I was up to my eyeballs with the production of the school play with all the onstage and offstage stuff," said Dearbhail, who teaches music at Confey College in Leixlip.
"John asked me had I figured it out, but I really didn't know anything."
She said the atmosphere in the school when it happened was "absolutely amazing".
"Everyone was screaming and I couldn't believe what was happening," she said.
Dearbhail said she hasn't had a second to think about the wedding.
"I've been so overwhelmed by the response. Girls are meant to think about things like this from the age of 10, but I never have, so I haven't a clue what we'll do," she said.
However, Dearbhail said the happy couple are a "pair of homebirds".
One thing she is certain of it is that the music will "have to be top notch" at the wedding.
Dearbhail has directed several plays and has constantly asked her fiance to get up on stage to perform with her.
