INVESTIGATION: Gardai are probing a glassing incident at TD Sean Conlan’s bar

FINE Gael TD Sean Conlan has been arrested by gardai for questioning in relation to an alleged glassing incident in a bar he owns.

Mr Conlan was arrested by appointment at Castleblayney Garda Station in Monaghan this morning at 9.30am.

He was arrested under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and was later released without charge.

A Garda spokesman said a file on the case is being submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A Garda spokesman said a man in his 40s came to Castleblayney Garda Station this morning and was arrested in relation to an alleged assault.

Mr Conlan was present in his family bar, which is currently being leased to a third party, when a man in his 20s was allegedly stabbed with a broken glass.

Gardai were called to the scene on Sunday August 23 but no arrests were made on the night.

A number of witnesses including the man who stabbed during the fracas have been interviewed by gardai in the past week.

Mr Conlan’s arrest comes seven days before he is expected to contest a Fine Gael selection convention for the Cavan/Monaghan constituency.

The TD is due to go before Fine Gael’s local membership next Tuesday alongside Arts Minister Heather Humphreys and Cavan’s Joe O’Reilly.

Members of Fine Gael’s grassroots organisation in Monaghan are expected to meet withsdj party headquarters ahead of the selection convention to discuss the ongoing controversies surrounding Mr Conlan.

Fine Gael secretary general Tom Curran is also due to speak to Mr Conlan.

In a statement today, Mr Conlan said: "I attended the Garda Station in Castleblayney this morning voluntarily to give my statement of complaint to the Gardai about the assault which was perpetrated on me in my family pub last Sunday."

He added: "I cooperated fully with the Gardaí.

"As this is an ongoing investigation I will be making no further comment in relation to the matter."
