An 18-year-old girl has died following a serious road traffic crash in Mayo yesterday evening.

The young female pedestrian was seriously injured she was hit by a car on the Castlebar to Claremorris Road at Carrownurlaur, Breaffy, Castlebar at approximately 5pm.

She was pronounced dead at 11.30pm last night at Mayo General Hospital.

The female driver of the car (aged 83) and a young male passenger were also taken to hospital after the collision, but no injuries were reported.

The road was closed to facilitate a Forensic Collision examination but has since since reopened.

Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact Castlebar Garda station on 094 9038200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
