A man (35) has been shot dead in Tallaght.

GARDAI have launched a murder investigation following the fatal shooting of a 35-year-old man in Tallaght last night.

The victim of the attack has been named locally as body-builder Alan O’Neill.

It is understood that the Mr O’Neill was shot in his hallway at about 10.30pm by the killers who may have been waiting for him.

He was shot three times in the brutal assassination with people living nearby saying they heard four gunshots.

“The sound of the gunfire was unreal, they were four of the loudest bangs you ever heard in your life,” one neighbour said.

Dublin Fire Brigade and Gardai responded to the scene where Mr O’Neill was found seriously injured but conscious.

He was transported to Tallaght hospital where his conditioned worsened and he was later pronounced dead.

Sources say the brutal killing may be linked to a dispute that he had with criminals in the Tallaght area.

Bullet holes were left in both the door frame of the house and a kitchen press further inside his home on the Kiltalown Road.

Me O’Neill shared the house with his partner who was said to be in deep shock this morning.

Gardai later arrested two men, aged 28 and 18, shortly after the shooting.

The two men fled the scene in a Mazda people carrier which was found burning at Belfry Square in the nearby Citywest area.

Gardai arrested the men at the scene of the burning car which was badly damaged.

Sources have revealed that the duo who have addresses in Clondalkin and Tallaght and both are known to gardai.

They were arrested when a passing patrol car spotted the suspected culprits fleeing from the scene.

The handgun used in the murder has not yet been recovered.

The suspects are still being questioned and Gardai are appealing for anyone with information to contact Tallaght Garda Station.

Two little girls that live near where the car was burned witnessed the dramatic scene last night and were left terrified this morning.

Both the scene of the shooting and the site at Belfry Square have been sealed off for technical examination.

Neighbours paid tribute to shooting victim Mr O’Neill who was a keen body-builder.

“He’s been living here for years. He seemed to be a terribly, terribly nice fella, a gentleman,” one neighbour said.

“Everyone liked him.”

Another local woman said that the community was a very close knit neighbourhood.

“It’s awful. It’s way too close to home for comfort,” she said.
