Ex-Dublin star held on suspicion of drink-driving
A former Dublin GAA star has been arrested after he was suspected of drink driving following the celebrations surrounding his former team's All-Ireland victory.
The man, who is in his 40s, was arrested after he was involved in a single-car collision on the Finglas Road on the northside of the city.
The incident happened close to Hart's Corner in Phibsboro yesterday afternoon.
It is understood that the now retired inter-county player was arrested at the scene of the accident at around 1.30pm.
Gardai confirmed that nobody was injured in the collision, but said the driver was taken to Store Street Garda Station.
The man was later released and is expected to appear before a sitting of Dublin District Court next month.
He is a respected former member of the Dublin squad and had a highly successful career with the team.
Attempts by the Herald to contact him last night were unsuccessful.
The suspected drink- driving incident happened following the celebrations of Dublin's victory over Kerry in Sunday's football final.
The rainy weather didn't put off fans as they drank to the Boys in Blue's win.
Revellers took to pubs and clubs all over the city as the Dubs lifted the Sam Maguire Cup for the third time in five years.
The party atmosphere continued yesterday morning as the cup was paraded through the city's streets to the bemusement of tourists, and current Dublin players posed for pictures with ecstatic fans.
The celebrations culminated with an event on O'Connell Street that saw tens of thousands of Dubliners applaud their footballing heroes.
