Ex-couple face trial over knife row

A CAR salesman has been accused of pinning his former partner to the fridge with a kitchen knife while she is alleged to have slapped him across the face during an argument on New Year's Day.

Shane Lyons (40) is also alleged to have pulled his former partner Fiona Kelly along the ground by her hair in the incident in Rathfarnham.

Kelly (37) is also alleged to have slapped him and attacked him with a knife.

She allegedly had bruising to her arms and legs, as well as a red mark at her neck, while Lyons allegedly had scrapes to his neck following the row.

The pair are both facing trial by judge and jury in the Circuit Court after a judge ruled that the matters were too serious for the District Court.

Lyons, of Three Rock Grove, Harold's Grange Road, Rathfarnham, appeared before Tallaght District Court charged with assaulting his then partner, Fiona Kelly.

He is also accused of producing a large bread knife during the course of a dispute, contrary to Section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Act, 1990.

Kelly, of Charlemont, Griffith Avenue, Dublin 9, is accused of assaulting Shane Lyons and of producing a knife during the course of a dispute.

The court heard the DPP has directed summary disposal of the matters in the District Court.

Outlining the allegation for jurisdiction purposes, Garda Joann Grogan said it is alleged that an argument broke out between Lyons and Kelly on January 1 last. Judge McDonnell refused jurisdiction and adjourned the matter for six weeks for the preparation of the book of evidence.
