Ex-City of Culture chief lands advisor role

FORMER advisor to Tanaiste Mary Harney, Patricia Ryan, has been hired by Junior Health Minister Kathleen Lynch as a special advisor.

Last year, Ms Ryan (inset) resigned as chief executive officer of Limerick City of Culture following a split within the group just days into 2014.

Ms Ryan has since begun working with Junior Health Minister Kathleen Lynch after her appointment was approved by Cabinet.

Last night, a senior source within the Department of Health said Ms Ryan's appointment was a good development.

"Patricia knows exactly how the system works and has great experience within the department.

"She bring a very qualified portfolio with her, has hit the ground running and will be of great assistance to Kathleen Lynch in terms of primary care and mental health," the source said.

"She will offer invaluable advice and knows what needs to be done here," they added.

Ms Lynch was last night in Russia for the St Patrick's Day celebrations and could not be contacted for comment.

Ms Ryan, a native of Limerick, has maintained a low profile since her resignation last year from the city of culture project.

Prior to working with the City of Culture project Ms Ryan worked extensively in the health system as special advisor to former Health Minister Mary Harney from 2004 until 2011.
