Etto lands Michelin Bib award for good and affordable food
Popular Dublin restaurant Etto in Merrion Row has for the first time received a Bib Gourmand listing in the Michelin Main Cities of Europe 2015 guide.
The new addition brings to four the number of Dublin establishments to be recognised, the others being Downstairs in Clontarf, Pichet in Trinity Street and the Pig's Ear in Nassau Street.
Michelin Bib Gourmand awards go to establishments that offer good food at afford- able prices of €40 or less for a three-course meal.
"Year after year, the Bib Gourmand selection has proved increasingly popular with our readers who want to eat well at a reasonable price," editor Rebecca Burr said at the launch of the guide.
The guide, now in its 34th year, is intended for business travellers and tourists visiting leading European cities who want to find, for example, a hotel near a convention centre, a restaurant in which they can entertain clients or an affordable hotel and dining options in the city centre.
"We're really thrilled to receive the award. We weren't expecting it," said Liz Matthews (30), who co-owns Etto with Simon Barrett.
"We have a great chef in Paul McNamara and a really good team working here at the restaurant," she said.
"We've also got great suppliers and there is a marvellous availability of great produce for restaurants in Dublin," she said.
Etto opened for business in October 2013 and has built up an envied reputation. The restaurant seats only 38 patrons when full.
"We're booked up a few weeks in advance at weekends but we get quite a lot coming in during the week too," said Ms Matthews.
"Now that we're in the guide we hope that tourists coming to Dublin for the St Patrick's Day festivities will come and visit us.
"We first heard we'd won the award on Twitter and then the phone calls started coming congratulating us.
"We've been lucky too with reviews in the press.
"We've been sent a sticker to put in our window and we must go and put it up on display now."
The restaurant and wine bar offers a daily changing seasonal menu in a relaxed and informal environment.
Simple dishes use ingredients from local producers and suppliers where possible.
Etto was the winner of the Best Casual Dining Experience in Ireland at the 2014 Food and Wine Magazine Awards.
It was also the winner of Best Casual Dining Experience in Ireland at the 2014 Irish Restaurant Awards.
