Eagle-eyed gardai spot fire on roof of nightclub
VIGILANT gardai prevented a potential disaster when they spotted a fire on the roof of a popular nightclub.
The routine patrol unit saw the smoke coming from the top of the Palace nightclub in the centre of Navan town, Co Meath shortly before 1am and raised the alarm.
Several hundred revellers were in the club at the time and the building was immediately and safely evacuated.
Five units of the fire brigade from Meath County Council fought the fire and prevented it from spreading.
"It was good fortune that the gardai spotted the fire when they did and thankfully everyone is fine," said a local source.
"The fire brigade managed to contain the fire within the roof and there was no structural damage," they added.
The cause of the fire is being investigated but it is believed to have been caused by a possible electrical fault within the roof space. There were no reports of any injuries.
