Dwyer to get life as Elaine's family tell tragic story
Graham Dwyer will get his first taste of real prison life today after he is handed down a mandatory life sentence for the murder of Elaine O'Hara.
The 42-year-old killer has been held at Cloverhill since his arrest in October 2013 and following his conviction on March 27.
But after today's sentencing hearing Dwyer will be brought to Mountjoy Prison to be processed into the committal system and will likely spend the night there.
However, he is likely to serve his life sentence in the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise, according to prison sources.
"There has been some suggestions that he might go to Arbour Hill, but that is a prison largely for sex offenders.
"While Dwyer's crime has a sexual element to it, his conviction is for murder and the Midlands is the most likely place for him," they added.
At today's hearing, Dwyer was also expected to hear first hand of the grief and trauma he caused the O'Hara family by snatching Elaine from them and stabbing her to death for his sexual gratification, with a victim impact statement due to be read to the court.
Judge Tony Hunt had deferred sentencing to allow the victim impact statement to be prepared.
The statement will catalogue the suffering caused to the O'Hara family by Dwyer's preying on and eventual murder of Elaine, and is expected to be harrowing and emotional.
It is the family's first opportunity since the trial began to tell Dwyer how his crime impacted on them.
Dwyer has been keeping a very low profile since being locked up and is monitored regularly by staff.
Although he was placed on suicide watch after his conviction, he has now been taken off the high-risk list.
Dwyer had been so confident that he would get off that he had boasted to prison guards of an imminent Late Late Show appearance and a fancy dinner of steak with wine.
And only 20 minutes before the jury unanimously found him guilty of murder, Dwyer was so convinced that he would be walk free from court that he even told prison officers, "I'm safe now".
