Dubs star Fennell lucky to miss Brazil trip fiasco

GAA star Eamon Fennell had a lucky reprieve earlier this week after he narrowly missed out on Killester United's ill-fated trip to Brazil.

The Dublin soccer team told the Herald of their devastation after 20 members and 11 officials weren't even allowed out of the airport when they arrived in Sao Paulo for a dream trip.

They were due to play against the Santos 'B' team and meet Brazilian legend Zico after emerging victorious in the Athletic Union League.

But upon arrival at Sao Paulo airport, they were kept in the airport for nine hours before being marched on a flight back home after two players were accused of committing "an illegal offence" by drinking from a duty-free bottle of vodka during the flight.

It has now emerged that Fennell (26) also plays soccer for the northside team -- and was due to go on the unfortunate trip.

"He was originally planning to go over to Brazil with the rest of the lads, who were all really looking forward to it. But he then learnt he was being considered for Ireland's International Rules team to face Australia at the end of this month, so he had to give it a miss," said a source.

"In the end, he was picked as one of the standby players so he's obviously delighted but feels bad for what happened for the lads as he could very easily have been there himself."

As well as gearing up for the thrilling encounter against the Aussie side in Croke Park on October 30, Fennell has also filmed an episode of TV3's new dating show Take Me Out.

The 6'4" sports star apparently went down a storm with the discerning ladies on the programme and ended up going on a date with a petite blonde.

The programme debuted last night and is expected to prove a big ratings winner for TV3, with a second series of the show already filmed.
