Dublin Zoo welcome's new 80kg addition to the herd
Corks popped at Dublin Zoo as staff welcomed the attraction's latest arrival - a rare Asian elephant calf.
The unnamed female calf arrived to mum Bernhardine (Dina) - the herd's matriarch - on Monday night after a 22-month pregnancy.
The healthy calf is estimated to be one-metre tall and weighs approximately 80kg.
The calf has got plenty of friends to show her the ropes as she is Dina's third, and the fifth elephant calf in total, born there in less than three years.
The new-born will join the herd of nine Asian elephants, including father Upali, in the Kaziranga Forest Trail. Gerry Creighton, Operations Manager at Dublin Zoo, said: "We are delighted with the new arrival and happy to report that both mum and calf are doing great.
"The calf is feeding exceptionally well and has settled into her surroundings seamlessly. We are very proud of the expanding herd."
