Drunk pals attacked cab in error

TWO friends who mistakenly thought a taxi had nearly collided with them as they returned from a night out rained kicks on the cab, causing more than €1,300 worth of damage.

Darren Atkinson (28) and Gary Fitzpatrick (25) were both ordered to pay compensation for the attack on the taxi in an incident in Dublin City Centre in February.

Atkinson, of Knockmore Avenue, and Fitzpatrick, of Kiltalown Heights, both in Tallaght, pleaded guilty to charges of criminal damage.

Solicitor Peter Connolly said the accused had consumed alcohol on the night and now accepted that they were in the wrong. Atkinson had worked as a general operative but was currently unemployed.

Fitzpatrick, a father-of-one, was on disability benefit, following a back injury sustained in a workplace accident.

Adjourning the case to April, Judge Timothy Lucey said he would fine them if they paid €700 each in compensation but was considering jailing them if they did not.
