A 27-year-old man was killed early today in a road accident in Co Laois. The accident happened at Ballybrittas, Portarlington, shortly after midnight when his car hit a ditch. He was the sole occupant and no other vehicles were involved.

Nine die in US missile attacks

Suspected US drones fired missiles at vehicles and hit a militant hide-out in a tribal region of north-western Pakistan, killing at least nine insurgents in the two attacks.

Other militants were also wounded in the two strikes yesterday, officials said.

The CIA has stepped up attacks in the region since December, when a suicide bomber killed seven CIA employees in neighbouring Afghanistan.

The latest attack came a day after the US missile attack destroyed a militant facility in the same region, killing nine suspects.

Haiti gunman shoots officers

Two off-duty police officers have been shot dead near an open-air market in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince.

The policemen were not wearing uniforms and were sitting in a car near a slum when gunmen pulled up on a motorcycle and opened fire.

One officer died in the back seat, while the other made it out of the car only to be killed on the pavement. A civilian man walking nearby was also fatally shot.

A National Police spokesman said such shootings have increased since thousands of prisoners escaped during the earthquake struck on January 12.
