He may be nearly 80, but Dublin singer Dickie Rock showed he's still able to rock the crowd when he hosted a festive bash in the capital.

Dickie (78) was joined by hard-working staff at the GPO for their annual Christmas concert yesterday.

The O'Connell Street venue was packed out during the lunchtime carol service.

Dickie entertained the crowd with a string of festive classics, including Santa Claus is Coming to Town and White Christmas.

Speaking afterwards, he said he was "absolutely delighted" to have been invited to perform at the charity event.

"It's great to be invited each year to sing in the GPO," he said.

Adoring fans Lillian (85) and Gerry Carroll (88), who have been married for 61 years, have followed the singer to all of his concerts.

They've been to every Christmas gig in the GPO since it first began 25 years ago.

Fabulous

"Dickie is great. We've been following him for years. He used to be all over the place," said Gerry.

Lillian added: "We had a great concert with him up in Dublin Airport not so long ago, it was fabulous."

Dickie performed alongside staff from the GPO, including Noel Carroll (61), who is a superintendent for An Post.

Noel has played violin for more than 50 years.

"We look forward to welcoming customers of all ages as they soak up the unique atmosphere of the GPO at Christmas while buying gifts and posting their precious cards and parcels," he said.

The Monday Club Choir, which is made up of retired An Post staff, were not performing yesterday, but can be seen in the afternoon at the GPO in the run-up to Christmas.

Mr Carroll said the lunchtime music session has been a "tremendous success".

Yesterday's ensemble included a pianist, violinist and singers.
