There were traffic delays on an epic scale when a giant inflatable minion - made famous in the Despicable Me movies - blew across the Old Swords Road in Dublin.

Gardai were called to the scene at approximately 3pm yesterday, where they were helped by passers-by to let the air out of the giant inflatable cartoon creature, believed to be 40-foot high.

INCIDENT

Santry-based Erin Van Londen saw the incident and alerted the gardai.

"We were driving down to the shopping centre and we saw the giant balloon coming towards us," Erin told the Herald. "We were in the queue of traffic, but we pulled out into the industrial centre, just to be at a safe distance from the balloon.

"I had seen it yesterday in the carnival when we were driving down and I'd said to my boyfriend, 'There is an absolutely huge inflatable minion in there'. So today when we saw it, we thought 'Oh wait, it must have toppled over'."

Erin alerted gardai to the incident who deflated the giant balloon.

"It was a bizarre enough phone call," she laughed. "I haven't seen the film, but I think everyone knows the Minions.

"Nobody was injured, so everyone seems to have had a bit of fun from it."

AA Roadwatch said that they did not receive any reports of major delays caused by the rogue inflatable while gardai were dealing with the situation.
