Derek wins out in tense Bainisteoir final

Derek Davis and his Glasdrumman team have lifted the Celebrity Bainisteoir trophy in one of the most tense matches ever seen in Parnell Park.

In a nail-biting final, the boys from Co Down took victory from comedienne Katherine Lynch's Leitrim team, Dromahair.

"I'm over the moon," said Derek, punching the air. "It has been a brilliant experience."

Hundreds of supporters from both counties filled the Dublin stadium to support the teams, and beaten bainisteoirs Andrea Roche and Emma O'Driscoll were among the crowd. Dromahair scored point after point but failed to get the much-needed goal, which was kicked through the goalpasts just before half time to give Glasdrumman a score of 1-01 to Dromahair's 0-05.

When the final whistle blew, the Glasdrumman side had added another eight points to their total, leaving Dromahair just a point behind with 0-11.

Derek had the advice of former Down manager Peter McGrath to help bring his team to victory, while Katherine was backed by All-Star Mickey Quinn.

Katherine Lynch said: "I am disappointed we lost, but that is GAA for you. We have nothing to be ashamed of. The team did me proud, we did Dromahair proud and we did Leitrim proud."

The final can be seen tomorrow night on RTE One.

Meanwhile, Derek and Katherine will join Ryan Tubridy on Tubridy Tonight programme, for a post-match analysis

Other guests on the show are Mario Rosenstock, Colm Meaney and Robson Green.
