A 23-year-old takeaway delivery driver was lured to a house where he was attacked by five men, some of them armed with slash hooks.

The victim, who was named locally as Christopher Nevin, was discharged from hospital yesterday morning after being treated for head injuries.

Gardai were notified about what happened after Mr Nevin went to a nearby house looking for help with his head covered in blood.

The violent incident happ-ened at the Lynn Heights estate in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, at around 10.15pm on Monday, and there have been no arrests so far.

It is understood that Mr Nevin had arrived at the house with a food delivery from a local Chinese takeaway where he works but was set on.

Sources said gardai are working on the theory that those responsible for the attack have links to a mob who are heavily involved in a local Traveller feud.

There have been a number of incidents linked to the feud all summer, which has meant that the armed Regional Support Unit has been patrolling Mullingar and other midlands towns.

Gardai have mounted special operations targeting criminals involved in various Traveller feuds and have seized weapons. They are investigating several shootings.
