Death of man being treated as suspicious

Gardai are investigating the suspicious death of a man in Waterford City yesterday afternoon.

The body of the man, believed to be in his early 50s, was discovered in the backyard of a house on Francis Street in the city shortly before 2.30pm.

Gardai were alerted and the emergency services rushed to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead.

The body has been preserved at the scene overnight and gardai sealed off the area to allow for forensic examinations.

A cause of death has not yet been determined, but gardai are treating the death as suspicious in the preliminary stages of the investigation.

It is not yet known if the man was a resident at the address.

A local man told the Herald that the deceased was well known within the area of Ballybricken.

Forensic teams completed their examinations at the scene at about 8.40pm, and a post mortem will be carried out at University of Waterford Hospital tomorrow.
