Gardai have uncovered a fully loaded AK-47 assault rifle and ammunition on waste ground in west Dublin

The high-powered assault rifle was wrapped in plastic and buried in the ground.

The discovery was made after officers conducted a search in the Chapelizod area.

Sources close to gardai said the rifle may belong to the notorious drug trafficking gang known as 'The Family' who have been operating out of Dublin for more than 20 years.

The Herald understands that the notorious outfit are using cartel boss Daniel Kinahan's preoccupation with their feud against the Hutch mob to expand their operations.

The deadly drugs feud has claimed the lives of 12 people.

"This is a great result and the seizure will definitely have helped save lives," said the source.

"The AK-47 assault rifle is a highly dangerous weapon. This one was in good condition and ready to use."

Cocaine

The seizure took place on the evening of Tuesday, May 23, in a location normally patrolled by Ballyfermot gardai.

'The Family' mob are not directly involved in the deadly Kinahan-Hutch feud.

Last year, it emerged that they had teamed up with a younger Clondalkin-based drugs mob involved in the distribution of cocaine.

'The Family' have previously been busted by officers for possession of heavy duty firearms. An extremely significant bust linked to the mob took place in 2015.

A Ballyfermot man is currently serving five years in jail in relation to that seizure.

The 41-year-old was caught with more than €3m worth of drugs, three sub-machine guns and two pistols. He was also found in possession of ammunition when gardai searched his house and a unit he was leasing in a Dublin industrial estate.

Sources said he been used as a "gilly" by the notorious mob.

Gardai suspect the 'The Family' of importing millions of euro worth of drugs every month into the capital in secondhand cars imported from north-west England.

Sources said the heroin, cocaine and firearms are then distributed from a west Dublin car dealership to middle ranking dealers who sell the deadly product across the capital and the entire country.
