Daily Mail refuses to pass on cut in VAT
The Irish Daily Mail was under pressure today to reverse its "appalling" decision not to pass on a VAT reduction to readers.
The Consumer Association of Ireland slammed the British-owned newspaper's pocketing of a reduction in VAT, which the Government cut to stimulate growth in the retail and tourist industries.
Chairman of the Consumers Association of Ireland Michael Kilcoyne said the decision as "absolutely appalling".
"The purpose of the VAT reduction is not to give an increase in profits to the Daily Mail by not passing on the savings to the consumer. It is absolutely appalling they have chosen to keep the savings."
Government TD Aodhan O Riordain described the paper's refusal as "a slap in the face to Irish consumers".
