A WINE importer who had too much to drink while out socialising was arrested when he slapped a woman across the face in an "unprovoked assault".

Colin Egan (39) had just met the woman and could not remember why he struck her after he began shouting at her in a south city centre pub.

Judge Michael Walsh left him without convictions after hearing Egan, who was "shocked" to see his own behaviour on CCTV, paid €500 to charity.

Egan of River Forest, Leixlip, Co Kildare, admitted assaulting the woman and disorderly conduct at the Globe Bar, South Great George's Street on December 6, 2014.

A garda sergeant told Dublin District Court that at 3.35am, Egan began shouting at the woman, who was also a patron. He then slapped her across the face.

Defence Barrister Edel Gilligan said the accused's recollection of the night was severely impaired and they had viewed the CCTV footage together.

From it, he appeared to be in conversation with a woman for quite some time before her friend came over.

"He doesn't know what was said but he takes responsibility for his actions," Ms Gilligan said.

"He is deeply ashamed of what he did. He had too much to drink and he apologises for his behaviour.

"He couldn't believe what happened until we watched the CCTV and it was pointed out. It was a genuine shock for him to see what happened to the lady."

He had diplomas in marketing and was "aware of the negative effects of alcohol".

Nothing like this had ever happened to him before.

Judge Walsh dismissed the charges under the Probation Act.

"I hope you learn from this, Mr Egan," the judge said.

"It appears to have been an unprovoked assault on the injured party, fortunately she was left without any physical injuries, nevertheless on a night out like this you should have behaved better."
