Teenager who flashed his backside outside Dublin hotel given a month in jail
A TEENAGER caught exposing his "rear end" to the public outside a Dublin hotel was arrested by gardai who feared the incident might "escalate", a court heard.
Daniel Maughan (19) had his pants pulled down "for a bit of fun", but gardai noted that an altercation was starting because of his behaviour.
He was jailed for a month after he admitted a public order offence.
Dublin District Court heard Maughan was already serving an unrelated sentence, and Judge Ann Ryan made the one-month term concurrent.
Maughan, with an address at St Margaret's Park Halting Site, Ballymun, pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour to cause a breach of the peace.
The offence happened at Rathmines Road Lower last October 15.
Gda John Wynne told the court he was on duty at 11.50pm when he saw the defendant outside the Travelodge.
"His tracksuit bottoms were down and he was exposing his rear end to members of the public," Gda Wynne said.
An altercation was taking place with members of the public and the officer feared it would escalate so he arrested the accused.
"When questioned about why he pulled down his tracksuit bottoms, he said it was 'only for a bit of fun'," Gda Wynne said.
He told Judge Ryan there was nothing else the court should be aware of.
Maughan had been on social welfare before going into custody, his solicitor Grainne Whelan said.
He had five brothers and one sister and had left school at the age of 12. He had "got in with the wrong crowd".
The offence "very much speaks for itself", Ms Whelan said. "It seems to have been play acting on the night.
"Your behaviour was completely unacceptable and it could have escalated into something much worse if the garda had not intervened," Judge Ryan said.
