TD Murphy facing trial accused of false imprisonment of Burton

Anti-Austerity Alliance TD Paul Murphy is among a group of protesters facing trial for allegedly falsely imprisoning Tanaiste Joan Burton in her car during a protest in west Dublin.

Mr Murphy and 15 other people appeared in Dublin District Court after being summonsed.

Another two people were not present and had their cases adjourned in their absence.

Mr Murphy (32), of The Copse, Woodpark, Ballinteer, is charged with false imprisonment of Ms Burton and her political advisor, Karen O'Connell. The incident is alleged to have happened at Fortunestown Road, Tallaght, on November 1, 2014.

State solicitor Rachel Joyce said the DPP was directing trial on indictment and asked for an adjournment for the preparation of books of evidence.

Also charged with two counts of false imprisonment are South Dublin County Councillors Michael Murphy (51), of Whitechurch Way, Ballyboden, and Ciaran Mahon (37), of Bolbrook Grove, Tallaght.

Other Tallaght defendants accused of false imprisonment are: Michael Banks (44), of Brookview Green; Frank Donaghy (69), of Alpine Rise; Peter Herbert (63), of Rossfield Park; Glen Carney (20), of Cloonmore Park; Declan Kane (46), of Glenshane Green; Thomas Kelly (33), of Cushlawn Dale; Paul Kiernan (39), of Brookview Way; Adam Lyons (21), of Drumcairn Drive; Scott Masterson (31), of Carrigmore Drive; Keith Preston (35), of Sundale Lawns; Philip Preston (36), of Dromcarra Avenue; Carol Purcell (55) and Ken Purcell (49), both of Kiltalown Green.

Keith Preston, Mr Kiernan, Mr Kelly, Mr Carney, Mr Kane and Mr Herbert are also charged with violent disorder.

Mr Lyons is also charged with violent disorder and damaging a garda car. Dylan Collins (20), of Bawnlea Green, Tallaght, is also accused of violent disorder and damaging a garda car.

Antoinette Kane (22), of Cloonmore Park, Tallaght, is accused of violent disorder.

At the same court sitting, United Left Alliance TD Joan Collins faced a public order charge arising from a protest against the installation of water meters in Harold's Cross. She is accused of failing to comply with garda directions at Parnell Road on April 20 this year.

Also accused of that offence are Patrick Burke (50), of Dolphin House, Rialto; Gavin Byrne (42), of Temple Manor Way, Greenhills; Andrew Canning (55), of Clanbrassil Close, Clanbrassil Street; Patrick Dunne, of St Gerard's Road, Greenhills; Aaron Healy (25), of Saul Road, Crumlin; Adele Kenny (39), of Monasterboice Road, Crumlin; Sofian Murphy (29), of Dolphin Road, Drimnagh; Oisin O Ra (18), of Derravaragh Road, Terenure; John O'Reilly (62), of Leiglin Road, Crumlin; and Patrick Waine (56), of St Malachy's Road, Walkinstown.

Judge Michael Walsh adjourned all these cases to a date later this month.
