A young man caught with a stolen bicycle had borrowed it to go to the shops while he was visiting relatives, a court heard.

Luke Doran (21) "didn't realise the bike was stolen".

Judge Anne Watkin ordered Doran to enter into a 12-month probation bond.

The defendant, of Suncroft Park in Tallaght, admitted before Dun Laoghaire District Court to possession of a stolen Giant bike, worth €600.

The incident took place at Blackrock Park on July 2.

Trouble

Garda Steven Dunican said the bike was taken from outside Blackrock Dart Station the previous evening by another unknown individual.

Gda Dunican said Doran was seen on the bicycle and gardai were contacted.

The officer said there was minor damage of €200 to the bicycle.

The court heard Doran has nine previous convictions, but hasn't been in trouble for three years.

Doran did not intend to keep the bike, and it was common for people to borrow items lying around on halting sites, the court heard.

Judge Watkin also ordered Doran to pay €200 for the damage.
