A young woman who stole three bottles of perfume from a department store had suffered a miscarriage just a few days earlier.

Nikita Ronan (21) went on a drink and drugs spree to try and forget the miscarriage, which was her third in the space of a few years.

She was caught stealing from the same store twice in the one day.

Judge Patricia McNamara ordered an updated probation report and adjourned sentencing at Tallaght District Court.

Excuse

She said Ronan could not use her problems as an excuse to commit crimes.

The defendant, of Bunting Road, Crumlin, had pleaded guilty to two counts of theft.

The shoplifting incidents both took place in Debenhams, The Square shopping centre, on January 23, 2017.

Ronan took three bottles of perfume, worth a total of €316.

In a separate incident, the defendant stole a bottle of perfume, worth €112, and took two more bottles, worth €206.

She was stopped and the property was recovered in a saleable condition.

Her lawyer said Ronan turned to drink and drugs in an effort to cope with what had happened to her.
