'Series of rows' before trainer's alleged assault
TV fitness trainer Francis Usanga assaulted and injured his model ex-girlfriend following a "dispute between both parties", it has been alleged.
Dublin District Court was told that, according to the prosecution, there had been a "series of rows" between Mr Usanga (29) and Emma Murphy (26) before the alleged assault.
A judge ruled that the case can be dealt with at district court level after considering a medical report outlining Ms Murphy's injuries.
Judge John King adjourned the case for further disclosure of prosecution documents to be furnished to the defence.
Mr Usanga, of Lanesborough, Finglas, is accused of assault causing harm to Ms Murphy at FX Fitness in Santry last July 3.
Wearing a navy blazer over an open-necked white shirt, dark grey jeans and black and white runners, he came to the front of the packed court and stood with his arms folded.
It was his second appearance in court on the charge.
The DPP's directions had previously been issued and the case was before the court for the judge to consider jurisdiction.
This determines whether a case can be heard at district court level or is sent for trial to the circuit court.
Det Sgt Michael Mulligan said there was a medical report available and handed it to Judge King. Defence solicitor Daniel Hanahoe said he had seen the report.
The judge asked Det Sgt Mulligan if he had anything to add.
"There was an altercation that occurred, following a dispute between both parties," he said. "There had been a series of rows."
The judge said he could "see no reason why I shouldn't acc-ept jurisdiction in this case".
Mr Hanahoe said he had received no other disclosure apart from the medical report.
Judge King made a full disclosure order. Mr Usanga conferred with Mr Hanahoe on his availability for an adjournment date.
He did not address the court directly during the brief proceedings and has not yet entered a plea to the charge.
Mr Hanahoe told Judge King that his client was "away from June 11 to July 7."
Nigerian-born Mr Usanga has appeared on a number of TV shows including TV3's Red Rock series and RTE's Today show.
Ms Murphy was not present in court.
