A SERIAL thief clocked up his 200th conviction after he stole vodka and chocolate by guzzling them at a shop till.

William Morrisson (50) had consumed the goods before staff could stop him, Dublin District Court heard. Judge William Hamill jailed him for nine months.

Morrisson, of Kilmartin Drive, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to theft and criminal damage to a bottle of vodka, a bottle of Lucozade and bar of chocolate at Spar, Dame Street, last January 30.

The court was told the defendant took all the goods from the shelves, opened them and consumed them.

He had no money to pay for any of the products and was arrested.

Judge William Hamill asked if any of the goods were recovered.

"He ate and drank them," the prosecuting garda replied. The damage charges related to the goods being opened and consumed.

He also admitted stealing a naggin of vodka at Dunnes Stores in South Great George's Street which he drank at the till last January 23.

He was stopped during a third similar incident.

The total value was under €100 and he had 199 previous convictions.

The court heard the defendant had a problem with alcohol and first served a sentence at the age of 14.
