THE former secretarial assistant of a government TD has taken a case of unfair dismissal against her former employer.

Cathy Shevlin claims she was "bullied and harassed" in her workplace by Fine Gael TD for Cavan-Monaghan Sean Conlan and one other person in his constituency office.

Mr Conlan (inset) says the claimant sought to undermine "his role as a public representative" by divulging confidential information.

An employment appeal tribunal heard that Ms Shevlin, who ran for Fine Gael in the 2009 local elections, began working with Mr Conlan in June 2011 and was based in the Dail deputy's constituency office in Ballybay, Monaghan.

She worked there with Mr Conlan and another woman and was paid €623 weekly.

Giving evidence on the first day of the hearing, Mr Conlan said he had issued the complainant with two oral warnings after breaching the terms of her contract.

He claimed he was informed that Ms Shevlin had given away tally information from recent elections. He told tribunal chair Niamh O'Carroll Kelly this information was given to those "who would not be politically sympathetic" to him.
