A PRISON inmate threw a television set at a medic's head when he was called following an altercation, it has been alleged.

John Gantley (31) is accused of assaulting the medic in the incident in the Mountjoy prison complex.

Mr Gantley, with an address at Lismore Road, Crumlin, is charged with the alleged offence on November 9, 2014.

Dublin District Court heard it was alleged the accused was in an altercation with another prisoner and was brought to his cell.

When the medic came in, the accused allegedly picked up a television and threw it at his head, which resulted in cuts to the alleged victim.

Judge Anthony Halpin read a medical report on the injuries.

"What size of television was this?" he asked, to which the prosecuting garda replied: "14 inches."

"I am very surprised that the injuries were superficial and there were no serious injuries whatsoever," the judge said.

He accepted jurisdiction to deal with the case in the district court. The court heard the accused was legally representing himself.

Mr Gantley consented to a four-week adjournment so he could consider material disclosed by the prosecution.

Bail was set on the charge and the accused will be expected to decide on how he intends to plead on the next date.
