Man spat in garda's face after court case
A FATHER-of-two who spat in a garda sergeant's face in the Criminal Courts of Justice has been jailed for a month.
Liam Deegan (24) assaulted the officer by spitting at him as he was being led to cells following a court appearance.
Judge William Hamill made the one-month sentence consecutive to a sentence Deegan is already serving.
Deegan, of Rathmore Drive, Tyrellstown, admitted assaulting a Sgt John O'Donovan at the CCJ on November 1, 2014.
Dublin District Court heard the accused had appeared at a Saturday morning sitting of the court.
He was being escorted to the cells when he called Sgt Donovan a liar and spat in his face. He also "made an attempt to swing at" the sergeant.
Another member of the gardai then placed him in a cell.
The court heard the defendant was currently serving another sentence.
He had previous convictions for assault and weapons charges.
Defence solicitor Edward Bradbury said the accused had been highly intoxicated on the morning and it was "not unusual to see people in that state" at Saturday court.
"He is very apologetic and knows he shouldn't have behaved in this manner," Mr Bradbury added.
