A MAN who was caught holding a knife outside a hostel claimed that he had just picked it up when gardai arrived.
Derek Byrne (24) said he had picked it up and was planning to discard it when gardai arrested him.
The defendant, of Aungier Street, Dublin 8, admitted before Cloverhill District Court to a slew of offences, including breach of the peace, theft of a mobile phone and possession of a knife.
Judge Grainne Malone said she had no choice but to impose a prison sentence, as the probation services say he shows a lack of empathy and has been aggressive towards the services who are trying to help him. She sentenced him to four months in prison.
