A man has admitted possession of child pornography after being caught with dozens of pictures and films of young children engaged in sexual acts.

Gareth Bowes (30) had the images and film clips of girls and boys on a laptop at his home in west Dublin when gardai searched it, a court was told.

The case against him was adjourned for the preparation of a pre-sentence probation report when he appeared in Blanchardstown District Court.

Bowes pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography at his home at Foxborough Manor, Lucan, on a date unknown between January 7, 2012 and January 1, 2013.

The charge alleges there were "images and movies" of males and females under 17 engaging in sexual acts with other children and/or with adults.

A state solicitor said the DPP was directing summary disposal of the case at district court level on a guilty plea only.

This means it would be sent for jury trial to the circuit court if the defendant denied the charge.

Sgt Maria Callaghan told the court that gardai found child pornography on the accused's laptop. The material included 54 images of boys and girls engaging in sexual acts. In others, parts of their bodies were exposed.

There were 18 movies and link files which served to open images or documents.

Judge David McHugh accepted jurisdiction to deal with the case at district court level after hearing an outline of the allegations.

Defence solicitor Simon Fleming asked the judge to adjourn the case for the preparation of a probation report to establish if the accused posed any danger to the community.

Bail

"There is nothing else to be said at this stage," the judge said.

After an adjournment, the case came back before the judge who was told the probation service needed more time to prepare the report.

The judge adjourned the case again and remanded Bowes on continuing bail. Bowes has been before the court four times since he was arrested and charged.
