Man fined €200 for helping shoplifter

A man who acted as a shield for a woman who was shoplifting from a department store has been convicted and fined €200.

Swords District Court heard that Rolandas Kasputis (49) blocked security cameras from recording the woman, who was stealing items from TK Maxx at The Pavilions Shopping Centre in Swords.

The pair left without paying for €76.96 worth of items and were arrested a short time later.

Kasputis, of Milesian Lawn, Swords, pleaded guilty to theft and handling stolen property last May 6. He has two previous road traffic convictions.

Injury

Defence solicitor Fiona D'Arcy said the 49-year-old is not working due to an injury to his hand.

"He assures the court nothing like this will happen again," said Ms D'Arcy. "He didn't fully appreciate that, while he was assisting her, he was committing a crime."

Kaputis is no longer associating with the woman with whom he committed the offences.

Judge Dermot Dempsey convicted and fined him €100 for theft and convicted and fined him a further €100 for handling the stolen property.
