A mother-of-two, who was compared to Jekyll and Hyde when drinking, assaulted a garda by spitting in her face.

Patricia O'Beirne (48), described as a binge-drinker who was otherwise a "meek lady", had been arrested for shouting drunken obscenities in a hospital when she spat on the officer.

Judge David McHugh fined her €100 at Blanchardstown District Court.

O'Beirne, of Tor An Ri Lane, Balgaddy, pleaded guilty to assaulting Gda Joan Sheridan at Belgard Road, Tallaght, on July 7, 2013.

She also admitted public drunkenness and breach of the peace at Tallaght Hospital emergency department and violent behaviour at Ronanstown Garda Station on the same date.

The court heard she admitted herself to hospital, where she threatened to harm herself and shouted obscenities at the public, before spitting on the officer.

Separately, last July 28, she was socialising at a house at Buirg An Ri Glen, Balgaddy, when gardai were called because she was drunk and causing a nuisance.

Incredible

Solicitor Terence Hanahoe said O'Beirne went to the hospital in "a bad state" and did not remember much about it.

Judge McHugh said it was a case of "Jekyll and Hyde - wrong gender", describing the accused as a "rather meek lady".

"She doesn't seem like a person who would be involved in this kind of behaviour. It's quite incredible what she is capable of when she has drink taken," he said.
