Jail for bag thief who targeted shopper (76)
A THIEF opened a 76-year-old woman's car to snatch her handbag while she packed her shopping, a court heard.
Justin Murray (36) was jailed for six months after he admitted the theft at a north Dublin shopping centre
Father-of-two Murray, of Moatview Drive, Coolock, pleaded guilty to one count of theft at Northside Shopping Centre, Coolock.
The incident happened on July 21 last year.
Gda Karen Caswell told Judge Michael Walsh at Dublin District Court that the victim had been shopping and was packing her bags into the boot of her car at 2.20pm on the afternoon in question.
As she was putting her shopping away, Murray approached her car, opened the rear passenger door and took her handbag from the back seat.
He then ran away through the shopping centre. He was later arrested.
The court heard the bag contained the woman's purse with €15 in cash, her bank cards and driving licence.
It was recovered but the cash had been taken.
Murray had 75 previ- ous convictions for off- ences including theft and burglary.
He was currently serving a sentence for another offence and was due to be released in December.
The accused had three sons, his solicitor Yvonne Bambury said.
He had an addiction problem before going into custody but was now awaiting a place in a treatment centre when a bed becomes available.
She asked Judge Michael Walsh to allow the accused to remain in Cloverhill Prison as this would allow him to take up that place in treatment.
Sentencing him, the judge said it should be indicated to the prison governor that the accused be allowed to remain in Cloverhill.
"Thank you, your honour," Murray said.
