A YOUNG man who was drunk and got into a milkman's van while he was making a delivery in the early hours of the morning had his case dismissed after he paid €1,000 to the victim.

Peader Brennan (22) swung an empty wine bottle at the milkman when he tried to get him out of his van in a housing estate in Malahide.

The bottle did not make contact, but put the milkman in fear, Swords District Court heard.

Brennan, of Sonesta, Malahide, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and the production of a wine bottle at Inbhir Ide, Malahide, on May 7 last year.

Sgt Bob Kavanagh told the court that at around 1.35am, the milkman was making a delivery in Malahide when he heard the door of his van slam shut. He saw Brennan in the driver's seat and went to the van to try to push him out.

Brennan, who has no previous convictions, started to swing the empty wine bottle before the milkman got him out of the van.

The milkman managed to drive away and reported the incident to gardai.

Judge Patrick Clyne dismissed the case after Brennan handed the court €1,000 in compensation to be paid to the milkman.

"I never want to see you here again," he warned Brennan.
