A convicted sex offender recently released from jail was caught shoplifting vodka by pouring it into a Coke bottle and trying to leave a supermarket with it.

Payne Maurice Mahon (39) went to Dunnes Stores and transferred the vodka into the empty bottle, but was stopped by security on his way out.

He was given a three-month suspended sentence after Dublin District Court heard he had served a long jail term for a sex offence.

Mahon pleaded guilty to theft. Sgt Peter Seery said the accused carried out the theft at the shop on Henry Street on July 20.

The vodka, worth €11.70, was not resaleable.

Monitored

The accused's prior criminal record included a conviction at the Central Criminal Court in 2007 for a sexual offence.

Mahon, with an address at Drumcondra Road Lower, Dublin 9, had served seven-and-a-half years of a 10-year sentence.

He was drug and alcohol free but had lapsed on the day, his solicitor Anne Fitzgibbon said.

He was being monitored after his release from prison and this was proving difficult for him.

He had to move address and there were issues around that which caused him to get "very distressed".

Judge John O'Neill suspended the sentence.
