A driver who reversed his car out into moving traffic was trying to get away from a dispute between his own and another family.

Edward Wall (43) reversed away from his home as up to 25 people gathered in an "agitated" state.

Judge John Lindsay fined him €750, but he avoided a driving ban after a court heard he works in the motor trade.

The defendant, of Fortunestown Crescent, Tallaght, admitted to careless driving at Fortunestown Lane, Tallaght, last February 10.

Shots

Det Gda Kieran McGrath said officers responded at about 5.30pm to a call that there had been a dispute between members of the defendant's family and another family.

He said it was reported that shots had been fired at a halting site, but gardai found no evidence of this.

They then went to Fortunestown Lane where up to 25 people had gathered outside Wall's home.

Gda McGrath said he saw Wall get into a car, reverse it across a footpath and on to Fortunestown Lane, causing traffic to stop.

Defence lawyer George Burns claimed Wall's car had been damaged and he just wanted to get away from the area.

Gda McGrath added that no one would say what the dispute was about.
